Battery Installation

Should you install a solar battery for home use?

Energy storage technology has been around for decades, but solar batteries used in home solar-plus-storage systems are increasing in popularity.

Read on for more information.

The best uses for solar batteries

When you install a solar battery as part of your home solar energy system, you can actually store the extra energy your solar panels produce at home instead of feeding it back into the electricity grid. With solar batteries, you maximise your ability to use the electricity generated by your solar panels on a day-to-day basis. During the times when you need more electricity than your solar panels are producing (later in the day or at nighttime), you can use the solar energy you have stored.

Whether or not you’ll save more money by installing a solar-plus-storage system depends how your electricity provider charges its customers. It starts with metering, you will typically receive a credit on your electricity bill for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of solar energy that you send back to the grid. You can use those credits later on when you need more electricity than your solar panels are generating. However, if you use more power than you have credits, then battery storage may be an option you need to explore.

Great news for Queensland homeowners and small businesses: as of July 1, 2025, the Australian Government has launched the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, a $2.3 billion initiative aimed at making home battery systems more affordable. This program offers an upfront discount of approximately 30% on the cost of installing eligible small-scale battery systems connected to new or existing rooftop solar.

🔋 Key Details of the Cheaper Home Batteries Program

    • Rebate Value: Around $372 per usable kilowatt-hour (kWh) of battery capacity, translating from approximately $3770 off a standard 11–13 kWh battery system.
    • Eligibility: Open to homeowners, small businesses, and community facilities with existing or new rooftop solar installations.  Rebate applies only once only at a premises – what you install NOW is what you get the rebate on.
    • Battery Size: Systems between 5 kWh and 100 kWh are eligible, with the rebate applying to the first 50 kWh of usable capacity
    • Installation Requirements: The system must be installed by an installer accredited with Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) and include a battery and inverter that is on the approved product list provided by the Clean Energy Council (CEC).   The battery cannot be moved from the premises for the life of the warranty or until after 2030, whichever is the later.
    • Program Duration: The rebate will decline annually until the scheme ends in 2030, encouraging Australians to make the move sooner rather than later. 2025 is the best year for the rebate!
